Obscentiy
I feel so much frustration.
I can’t get through to my political representatives with any assurance that my point of view will be taken into account.
I have no hope that I can actually get through to any of those who have decided that the course of the world is to be one of war so I can tell them how I feel or what I fear.
I can’t hold the hand of all the wives or mothers or husbands of defence force personnel to say I wish that their loved ones had not been sent to this stupid war.
I can’t yell at the boneheads who take the footage of the pretty bomb trails and the resultant explosions and set them to nice boppy music, because in one sense they are trying to deal with the whole stupidity of this current ‘war’ themselves – but it is an obscenity. A pornography of death.
In ancient Greek tragedy murders were committed offstage out of sight because they were obscene. Each night I turn on my television and I am treated to the most expensive snuff movie ever made. If that is not obscene I don’t know what is!
The most tragic of those Greek tragedies were ones in which the greatest obscenity was eventually committed because it all started out with the highest of ideals. George Bush’s “neo-conservatives” have started out with the highest ideals of righting a wrong that was created nearly thirty years ago when their predecessors armed and raised up men like Saddam Hussein and Usama bin Laden and then broke the promises made to these people and walked away from the results. Each night for the last six nights I have watched the news and have seen the increasing obscenity played out on my television, as one group of people with a particular view of the world decides what is best for all of us.
How might the world have been had Usama bin Laden and his ilk, instead of being groomed as killing machines and then left to their own devices after the Russians withdrew from Afghanistan, had been encouraged to the rule of law and not abandoned to fester with resentment that they had been used by a political entity that cared nothing for the Afghan peoples, just for ‘beating’ its own enemy.
How might the world have been had the USA and others on the “Western” bandwagon had been less inclined to encourage Third World debt to develop export crops, instead of developing sustainable food supplies so that all countries could feed and clothe their children and care for their elders with respect?
Because another way has not been found we are facing the consequences of the actions taken instead. It’s almost as if those who have constructed the policies that have seen this ‘war’ started had not considered the possibility of others looking at the world in different ways to themselves. One wonders what these ‘neo-conservatives’ viewpoint will be once Saddam Hussein is defeated and there are lots more terrorists blowing up Americans and their allies?
I heard an interesting comment on the radio the other morning. I paraphrase…
“The armed forces are trained dogs of war. Don’t let them loose unless you are willing to accept the consequences” The American media being constrained by the American government not to show the consequences demonstrates to this little black duck that those who started this fight do not yet realise what they have set in motion and don’t want people to realise what the consequences might be.
It’s no wonder that young people around the world (who are probably feeling even more disenfranchised than I am at this moment) are so easily stirred into flouting civil behaviour and running amuck. They can see consequences, but right now they are reacting in the way they have learnt from those who hold the power to start wars like this. If you don’t like what’s happening, cause mayhem, chaos and you might even be able to hurt someone and that’s good fun … just like on TV and paid for by our tax dollars.
All the same, I wish the troops can do their job as well as they can, because now the fighting has started all any of us can do is wait and pray that not too many body bags will come home – to either side in this bloody stupid pornographic snuff movie, brought to us by George Bush and his ‘neo-con’ mates.
Wouldn’t it stuff all the power-brokers up if all the soldiers on both sides decided to put their weapons down and let the two commanders in chief fight it out between themselves?
