Bush to announce moon mission - www.smh.com.au: December 5, 2003
"US president George Bush is to announce a new space program which could include missions to the moon and possibly even to Mars, it was reported today.
According to National Review magazine, Mr Bush is expected to make the announcement in a speech on December 17, the 100th anniversary of manned flight by the Wright Brothers."
I really don't know what to make of this. One is tempted to observe that things must be going really wrong and there is a need to distract 'The People' from all the other things that are happening around them in the USA. After all, arguing about the "waste" in exploring brave new worlds when things are getting so bad at home is one of the classic arguments that I have always suspected led to the ridiculous situations that NASA has found itself involved in during the past fifty years.
But on the other hand, if the US is going to go back to the stars, it would be nice to do so before the first crews of lunar walking astronauts shuffle of this mortal coil.
Funny, I've never really lost the dream that humans would go back to exploring what is off this planet as well as what is still on it. *wistful*
Perhaps one day I will have descendents living on other planets! Now that would fulfil a "Star Trek" dreaming!
