A View From A Broad
To quote this serving soldier (starts halfway down the entry after the continuation of an interesting thought) ...
"Top came and got me this morning and dragged me out into the courtyard. 'Ginmar, cmere,' he said urgently.
'What?!'
'This is important. I gotta show you something.'
The something turned out to be a frog living near the pool. 'Uh, yeah.' I looked at the frog. He looked at the frog. Then he looked at me significantly.
'It's a frog,' he pointed out.
'I noticed that.'
'I'm afriad of frogs.'
So, to recap for those of you in the cheap seats, my 1st. Sgt., the cop from New Orleans, the guy who regularly does stupid and crazy shit and gets me to take his back while doing it, the guy who thrives in this environment, he's afraid of an animal that weighs approximately two ounces and which makes politicians look attractive. "
This woman is serving in Iraq. She writes evocatively and strongly on all sorts of stuff that has relevance to people not just on what happens to soldiers, or even women soldiers, or even just women. I like the way her thoughts run, but what I'm really appreciating are her little vingettes of life in Iraq for serving soldiers that contrast with the other stuff that is more 'official' or 'controlled' in the way it is pre-digested for consumption.
This is raw. And yet, it points out that these people are just people doing a jo.
This happens to be a 'nice' story. Some of her others have been a little less comfortable, but Ginmar writes with real flair to get the image across.
I really do hope that when this is over she gets to write a book capturing her voice in one big lump as has happened to other enlisted personnel in recent conflicts.
