I am ... a Winner!
Last week, as most people may have noticed, was Friday 13th. It also being a full moon and winter solstice next weekend, I decided to indulge in a little flutter and bought myself a lottery ticket.
This morning I toddled down to the newsagents to find out if I had won anything (the $22 million would have been nice, but I really didn't expect anything except spending my money for a "flutter“).
I was one of three people waiting to be served, as I stepped up to have my ticket validated the young lady standing next to me wished me “luck” and greeted my good fortune even as her ticket was checked and she didn't win any thing. “It's nice to know someone won something”, she said with a big grin.
But as I turned away from the counter, chuckling to myself over this little blessing, the other lady spoke up. “Look at this,” she grouched, “I got three numbers, but this should be a 17, not a 16!”
The other young lady and I looked at each other with our mouths agape! “How sad!” said she as we moved away from the counter and the disappointed punter, whom we left complaining to the chap behind the counter.
I have spent the whole day in wonder at the opposing attitudes evinced by these two strangers. It put me in mind of the chorus from Sunday School “Count your blessings/ Name them one by one ...” so I've been counting my blessings today and have come to the conclusion that I am a very blessed person – and having a bit of extra cash is merely money for jam and will be spent as such :-)
