Discovering nice things about the boss

Going into work was nice last Friday ... achey from the bronchitis that I’ve been battling, but nice. It felt particularly good when I was able to answer a question by the CEO about something and demonstrate that the keywords did work and were all listed!

However, my reaction when he came into my office quietly and made me squeak (in a bronchial basso) put me in mind of the list of "10 things to say when caught napping by the boss" that occasionally meanders its way through my inbox. The last recommendation is, as ones' traitorous eyes open from a quick snooze, to be heard muttering “... And thank you for the best boss I've ever worked for. Amen.”
This is not merely because the CEO is a nice man, but because his response to my reaction was to let me know it was okay by him to change my office layout so that I would be more comfortable.

So I have – changed the location of my computer that is, so that I am no longer sitting with my back to the door feeling that someone might sneak in and surprise me. It’s odd how vulnerable it makes one feel when you can’t see who is coming through the door. Makes me wonder at the self-confidence of a boss that would insist that their employees have to sit in a position where whatever they are working on can be seen from the corridor where the boss could prowl unseen. Perhaps I am just contrary, but to be treated like that would encourage me to find ways to skive off and not do my job.

But I am having too much fun learning this job … there is a real secret delight in finding something that fulfils one of Ranganathan’s principles of “every reader their book” (or bit of information).
I love the idea of being a ‘librarian’
