Well, it’s arrived!
This time last week I got home to a large yellow postal envelope sitting on my computer with the family standing around in artfully dilettante poses trying not to be vitally interested in the contents of said envelope.
It was Orbital Burn by our friend Adrian. Adrian had spent the last year working on a sequel, blogging merrily about the odd things that constitute the process of writing and editing to get a book ready to print and some of the interesting ideas that he was exploring in writing the book. In a way I was almost afraid to open it and be disappointed, because I had been looking forward to it so much.
But I don’t know why I worried. Adrian is a damn fine story teller and though I will never admit how long it took me to read it *evil grin in Adrian’s direction* by the end of the book I was thinking “I want to know what happens next” and blowing my nose in a big hankie because in some ways the ending is quite sad.
Now all I have to do is wait until the rest of the family finish reading it … the spouse and the two offspring should be finished by the end of this week, and then we are all looking forward to finding out each other's favourite bits.
One of the nice things about having a reading family is that now the children are older, although it may take longer to get to the end of the books, we can all share in the discussion of a particularly juicy one together. And we have been looking forward to this one.
Thanks for a rollicking good yarn, Adrian,!
